Metta Hermitage

A place for meditation, Batu Arang, Malaysia

Introduction

Metta Hermitage was set up in 1988 with the aim of providing a conducive environment in which to practise and study
the Buddha-Dharma.

It is located on a hill with a forest setting, about twenty minutes from the Rawang toll plaza of Malaysia's North-South Expressway, and can be approached by car.

Metta Hermitage started from humble beginnings, with no modern conveniences such as water and electricity. Through the efforts of Guru Lingam, Metta Hermitage today is equipped with the Siddhartha Meditation Hall, library, huts (kutirs), dining area and kitchen.

Metta Hermitage promotes solitary living; a respite from the rush of modern living, to more fully embody the teachings of the Buddha.

Sharing a Thought

Buddha's last advice to his favourite disciple Ananda; who spent all his life serving the Lord Buddha in His mission to spread the Noble Dharma to everyone, irrespective of race, caste or status.

"Ananda, be an island upon thyself" - Dhammapada

What the Buddha achieved through his great renunciation of worldly, princely life and superhuman effort and sacrifice - the Noble Dharma - He gave it FREE to one and all and urged, advised, explained and guided the people to live the life of sense restraint, sense control and purification. Even the Enlightened Buddha could not hand over Nirvana on a silver tray to Ananda; how can we buy Nirvana with money. When we truly want to cross the ocean of Sangsara and obtain Nirvana, we have to purify our minds, cultivate virtues and detach ourselves from attachment to worldly cravings...

On behalf of Metta Hermitage Meditation Society, I sincerely offer the services and premises, set up by the kindness and good thoughts of donors, to one and all for their serious meditation practice.

Let Metta Hermitage be a beacon of hope to all, irrespective of race, colour, religion or caste.

Dharma cannot be bought or sold.

May all beings try and walk the Path of Dharma to be free from physical, mental and emotional suffering.

Forests are delightful, but the worldlings find no delight in them;
only those who are free from passion will find delight in them,
for they do not seek sensual pleasures.
